FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Springfield, IL – State Representative Mike Coffey (R-Springfield) expressed his satisfaction as his bill aimed at increasing access to college scholarships for children of U.S. military veterans successfully passed through the General Assembly with unanimous support. House Bill 4733, championed by Rep. Coffey, garnered a resounding roll call vote of 112-0.

“This bill extends our respect to even more children of veterans, and I’m happy the General Assembly had bipartisan support on HB4733,” said Rep. Coffey. “I will always support and advocate for Veterans and their families. This bill reflects the importance of recognizing our Veterans by expanding scholarships to more students.”

The bill, officially known as HB4733, was introduced by Rep. Coffey with the aim of amending the University of Illinois Act to broaden the eligibility criteria for honorary scholarships to include the children of veterans who served during the invasion of Panama between December 20, 1989, and January 31, 1990.

Rep. Coffey further stated, “I believe the sacrifices made by our military and their families can never be fully repaid. However, adding the children of those who served during Operation Just Cause to be eligible for scholarships is one small way we can repay them for their sacrifices.”

HB4733 received support from various bipartisan sponsors and is now set to be deliberated in the State Senate for further consideration.
